The use of dental implants to replace lost or missing teeth has more than tripled in the last 10 years. Teeth need each other for support. If one tooth is gone, the surrounding teeth will often move in to fill in the gap, affecting not only the alignment of your other teeth, but your biting and chewing ability as well. If most or all of your teeth are gone, your appearance and your speech is adversely affected, and your ability to chew foods is seriously compromised, resulting in poor digestion and all the problems that can create.
What are implants?
The implants are surgically-placed titanium cylinders that serve as artificial tooth roots in the bone of your jaw, stabilizing the bone tissue and preventing it from receding, as it would if the missing tooth were not replaced. After they’re placed, these cylinders fuse with the bone in your jaw.
How are implants placed?
Because implant success is based on us knowing about your lifestyle and your unique dental condition, X-rays and impressions will all be needed before we can begin. And as with any procedure completed in our office, we’ll make sure you’re entirely comfortable throughout the entire process.
We’ll make a small incision in the gums, and create a channel in the bone to receive the implant. We’ll surgically place the titanium cylinder into the channel, and then we’ll close the incision with a few sutures, and place either a small healing cap or a temporary crown on the site to cover and protect it.
We’ll then need to wait until the cylinder fuses to your jawbone – typically three to nine months. This amazing process is called osseointegration, and in it, the bone tissue in your jaw will actually fill in the area around your implant. Once that’s completed, over a series of succeeding visits, crowns, a bridge or dentures can be crafted and attached to the implants, restoring your smile and your bite.
The advantages of implants over other methods of restoring lost teeth
As we said earlier, since implants mimic the roots of your teeth, they help to stabilize bone levels in your jaw, keeping bone from receding. This is important because bone loss can affect your appearance, making you look much older than you really are. Not only can your chin seem to jut forward, the distance between your chin and nose can actually shorten, compressing your face. Eventually, your face muscles all start to droop.
Also, since implants are supported by your jawbone and not by surrounding teeth, as bridges are, we don’t need to remove any tooth structure from the adjacent teeth, so they retain their strength and function.
Will implants suitable for you?
To be a candidate for dental implants, you must be in good overall health, and have healthy gums and proper bone structure. If you have a systemic disease such as diabetes, a problem with clenching or grinding your teeth (called bruxism), or if you smoke or drink alcohol, implants may not work out for you.
Poor oral hygiene is one of the main reasons implants fail. We will work with you, using new tools and techniques that will help you properly care for your implants. You must be meticulous about your dental home care, seeing us frequently (four times a year is typical) for exams and professional cleanings, to ensure that your gums and implants remain healthy.
