Medical Tourism in Turkey

After 1990, with strong support from the government, the private sector’s share of the healthcare industry began to increase. Well-educated and well-qualified physicians and healthcare support staff have supported this fast and intensive development. In addition, cooperation between international medical organizations and the accreditation of healthcare providerss by international standardization organizations has led to the increased the quality of services provided by healthcare institutions.

This transition period has created a more qualified and more affordable healthcare service for local and foreign patients. As a result, Turkey has become a major medical tourism destination accepted by international authorities, especially for the following treatment types: organ and bone marrow transplantation, cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, oncology, gamma knife treatment, IVF, orthopedics and traumatology, dental services, spine surgery, neurosurgery, reproductive health and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, plastic surgery and ophthalmology (Source: Foreign Economic Relations Board, 2011).

According to a recent study from  “Patient Beyond Border” – 2013, Turkey is among the top 10 medical tourism destinations.
